Interview with Dr. Angela Cowser on Racial Capitalism
In the spirit of the recent uprisings across the nation and world in response to police murders of black and brown people, over the next three weeks the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice is holding three conversations on race and class with prominent academics, activists, and public figures. This week we are proud to feature a conversation with Founder and Director of Wendland-Cook Dr. Joerg Rieger and Dr. Angela Coswer who is the Associate Dean of Black Church Studies and Doctor of Ministry programs at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
What is often missed in these conversations on white supremacy and racial violence is the degree to which such racial inequities are built into the very structure of our nation’s economic life. Economic justice and racial justice are rarely seen as deeply connected. Many people are unclear on how to connect the two, and so a pathway to building power grounded in deep solidarity and intersectionality remains out of grasp.
These interviews explore the connections between race, class, and the intersectional, deep solidarity needed to create real economic and political alternatives to our current oppressive system.
We’re excited to launch the series with Joerg’s interview of Angela below!
